Q&A – Ørsted: Renescience Northwich / June 2018

The Renescience Plant Northwich is a brand new waste treatment facility, which turns household waste into green energy. The plant uses Ørsted’s patented Renescience technology and is the first full-scale bio plant in the world capable of processing household waste through enzymes, mechanical sorting and anaerobic digestion. What is happening?
As you may be aware, the construction of the Renescience plant in Northwich has been completed and the plant has been operating on real waste since summer 2017. The enzymatic process is working as expected and producing bioliquid and clean recyclables, whilst generating electricity for the UK grid.

We have now submitted a planning application to Cheshire West and Chester Council for an extension to the Renescience waste management facility.

Why have you made this planning application?
The proposed extensions will allow us to incorporate additional processing equipment, as well as further storage and maintenance areas, increasing reliability and efficiency of the plant.

When will this be happening?
The planning application was submitted in late June 2018. We expect a decision in August and we hope to begin work in Q3 2018.

What area does this affect?
The planned extension is to an existing building onsite at Lostock Works.

Where will the extension be?
The extension will be attached to an existing building. It will take the form of five additional areas built onto the main sorting building at the plant, to create a bigger space.

How will this affect residents?
The extended areas will be the same height as the existing building and constructed in the same style, so there will not be any additional visual impact for residents. We will be implementing strict measures to manage any environmental impact throughout construction and this will include traffic control.

As these extensions will not result in any increase to the operational capacity of the facility in terms of input or output of waste, we do not foresee there be an increase in the operational vehicular movements currently permitted.

How can I find out more?
You will be able to view and make any comments on the planning application on the Cheshire West and Chester Council planning application website in the coming weeks. https://pa.cheshirewestandchester.gov.uk/online-applications/

To locate the application, the site address can be used: Renescience Northwich, Griffiths Road, Lostock Gralam, Northwich, CW9 7NU
