New Ørsted scholarships now open for University of East Anglia students

Ørsted’s Greener Futures scholarships are open for a second year to talented Norfolk residents wishing to study science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) subjects.

The scholarships will support one undergraduate and one masters student at the University of East Anglia (UEA) who wouldn’t otherwise have the means to pursue their studies.

Recipients of the inaugural Greener Futures scholarships were master’s student Perfect Bakashaba, 34, from Norwich studying global development and Naomi Wilson Fediuk,19, from Sheringham taking an undergraduate degree in environmental science.

Both talked of how the scholarships have made a difference to them.

Perfect said that he could not have undertaken his studies without the scholarship: “For me, the scholarship was the difference between actually pursuing [my studies] and not pursuing [them] because I don't have a lot of money. I have three children and bills to pay so the scholarship has been really, really important and much needed.”

Naomi explained that the scholarship allowed her to focus on her studies “If I didn't get the scholarship, I still would have come to uni but I would have been struggling a lot more. At the moment I only need to do a day or two a week at my part-time job, but if I didn't have the scholarship I'd probably be working as much as I can every single day.”

UEA Director of Development, Alumni and Campaigns David Ellis said: “It’s inspiring to see students with such a passion and energy for the environment and sustainability. We’re grateful to Ørsted for making it possible for enthusiastic young people to turn their dreams of study into reality.”

The scholarships are part of the larger Hornsea 3 Community Benefit Fund which commits £7 million to projects developed by and for the benefit of the local community in North Norfolk.

Imran Nawaz, Senior Advisor at Ørsted, said: “The deadline for the next round of Greener Futures scholarship applications is 30th May 2025. We’d encourage as many Norfolk students with a passion for environmental and sustainability issues to apply as possible.”

Ørsted Greener Futures Postgraduate and Undergraduate Scholarships will be available for the 2025-26 academic year.
