A new sensory trail and garden space is set to transform an underused outdoor area at Abbotsvale Community Centre in Barrow-in-Furness, thanks to a £31,000 grant from the Walney Extension Community Fund.

The project, titled ‘Abbots Vale Oasis’, will create an inclusive, tranquil environment for the local community, with features including aromatic plants, textured pathways, interactive sensory stations, and accessible seating areas. Designed to benefit individuals of all ages and abilities – especially those with disabilities, sensory processing challenges or mental health needs – the trail will promote relaxation, gentle exercise, and social interaction.

The project forms part of a wider site redevelopment, replacing an old all-weather bowling green. Supported by community consultation and an energy efficiency audit, the initiative also contributes to local environmental goals, with planting designed to enhance biodiversity and promote pollinator habitats.

Karen Lancaster, Community Centre Manager at Abbotsvale Community Association, said:

“We’re so grateful to the Walney Extension Community Fund. This sensory trail will offer a beautiful, accessible space that encourages outdoor engagement, improves wellbeing, and helps build stronger community connections. It’s already attracting fantastic support from our community, and we can’t wait to bring it to life.”

Imran Nawaz, Ørsted’s Senior Advisor & Community Benefit Fund Manager, added:

“We’re delighted to support Abbotsvale’s vision for a more inclusive and sustainable community space. Projects like this demonstrate the long-term value our community funds can bring, delivering tangible benefits for local people while supporting environmental goals.”

The Walney Extension Community Fund is part of Ørsted’s wider commitment to the communities that host its renewable energy infrastructure. Since its launch in 2016, the Fund has awarded over £4.6 million to almost 260 community and environmental projects in coastal areas stretching from Seascale to Fleetwood and Walney Island.

The next application deadline is 9 January 2026, and groups can apply for grants between £500 and £50,000. Community groups interested in applying are encouraged to visit the fund website or contact GrantScape for support with their application.
