Grimsby’s Horizon Youth Zone nears opening, five years after Ørsted’s £1m donation

Five years on from announcing a £1 million donation to Horizon Youth Zone in Grimsby, Ørsted is celebrating the landmark moment as the Youth Zone moves into its final stages before opening to young people. Despite the challenges posed by Covid and the complexities of restoring a Grade II listed building, the project has made remarkable progress. Following a successful first look event a couple of weeks ago, the Youth Zone is now being kitted out and prepared to welcome young people through its doors.

Over the past five years, Ørsted’s support has extended beyond funding. The company has backed the Young People’s Development Group to ensure youth voices shape the space, collaborated on the design of the careers area to inspire future pathways, and participated in interview panels to help recruit a skilled, committed team to bring the Youth Zone to life.

Lauren Little, Senior Stakeholder Advisor at Ørsted, said: “We are incredibly proud to have supported Horizon Youth Zone from the outset. This journey has required patience, partnership, and a shared belief in what this space will mean for Grimsby’s young people. From working alongside the Young People’s Development Group to co-designing the careers area and joining interview panels, our aim has always been to help create a place where every young person can feel inspired, supported, and excited about their future. Seeing the Youth Zone so close to opening is a testament to the resilience and dedication of everyone involved.”

Lucy Ottewell-Key, Chief Executive from Horizon Youth Zone said: “Ørsted’s commitment has gone far beyond a generous donation. They have stood with us through the complexities of transforming a Grade II listed building and the setbacks of the pandemic, offering hands-on support to ensure the Youth Zone reflects the needs and ambitions of local young people. The first look event showed just how special this space will be, and as we complete the fit-out, we’re thrilled to be on the cusp of opening a welcoming, safe, and inspiring place for North East Lincolnshire’s young people.”

The Horizon Youth Zone will provide young people with access to a diverse range of activities, mentoring, and practical support, helping them build confidence, skills, and aspirations. Ørsted looks forward to the official opening and the positive impact the Youth Zone will have across the community.
