Grimsby’s docks were once home to the world’s largest fishing port. Today, a new maritime industry is thriving and growing here, bringing with it jobs, economic opportunity, and benefits for community organisations.

That’s what offshore wind’s done for Grimsby. But none of it would have been possible without Grimsby and the people who live and work here.

Because it’s not the industry that powers the town – it’s the town that powers the industry.

Good jobs and fresh opportunities

Down on Grimsby Docks sits Ørsted’s East Coast Hub. You might not have seen it, but this building is the base for almost 700 people who work day and night to keep some of the world’s largest offshore wind farms spinning.

Some work in the office, others out at sea. Some work a regular 9-to-5, others on 12-hour shifts, many staying out at sea for a fortnight at a time.

Almost half of those directly employed by Ørsted live in Grimsby, Cleethorpes, or Immingham. Another quarter within an hour of the docks.

The offshore wind industry here also relies on countless dock workers, local suppliers, hotels, restaurants, and everyone else it takes to sustain this latest chapter in Grimsby’s maritime story

It’s a story that’s set to continue for many decades to come, as the growing number of wind farms built and operated from Grimsby continue to power millions of homes across the UK.

In 2025, offshore wind generated a record 18% of the UK’s electricity overall. By 2030 this will be close to half. Thanks to its scale and efficiency, offshore wind can continue to help meet the UK’s growing demand for electricity and lower costs. How?

Up the town down dock: a chant for Grimsby

The history and fortunes of Grimsby have gone hand in hand with what goes on down dock since the 1700s. Generations of Grimbarians have sailed out to earn their wages, stock the fish market, and keep the shops, the pubs, and everything else in the town going.

Today, very few boats head out to fish. But more and more of them carry a new generation of local workers out to the offshore wind farms and back, bringing new hope and prosperity to this town – something we’re proud to chant about whenever we get the chance.
