DONG Energy opens doors to Norfolk communities

DONG Energy is holding a series of events across Norfolk to hear local people's views on a new offshore wind farm they are proposing to develop.

Hornsea Project Three will be located approximately 120km from the North Norfolk Coast and if built out to full capacity (2.4 gigawatts) will be capable of generating enough renewable energy for well over 2 million homes.

Although the project will not be visible from the Norfolk shore, electricity generated by the wind farm will be connected into Norwich Main National Grid Substation via cables that will be buried onshore and it will also require a new onshore substation in the vicinity. Therefore, DONG Energy is keen to engage at this early stage of the project with communities that may be impacted, to understand their concerns and where if the proposal can be modified as it matures to alleviate these.

The company has issued what is known as a Statement of Community Consultation (SoCC) to explain how they plan to consult local communities on the proposed project, and how people can have their say.

Stuart Livesey, Hornsea Project Three Development Manager said: "It's really important that we hear local communities' views on the environmental, economic and social aspects of what we're proposing, especially in the early stages as their input can really help to shape the direction of the project and the final design.

"Publishing the SoCC helps people understand exactly where and how they can comment on our plans, and also how their views will feed into the development process. We've clearly set out our plans for consultation in the lead up to submitting our consent application in 2018 to ensure local communities have sight of what the next steps will be.

"Over the next few weeks our project team will be out visiting these communities giving them a chance to comment on our plans and raise any concerns. The project is at an early stage and we are keen to understand where sensitivities exist and if so, how the project could be altered to mitigate these. We are also meeting local stakeholder groups and ensuring that interested people are kept up to date via regular newsletters and project updates.

This phase of consultation will last until the end of November and results will be made public once comments have been reviewed.
