Six organisations are celebrating the exciting news that they have been awarded the very first grants through the Hornsea 3 Skills Fund.

The Skills Fund, part of the Hornsea 3 Community Fund, was open to projects in areas of Norfolk and Suffolk that would see experienced organisations develop and deliver Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) related training or education courses, one-off events, or a programme of targeted events.

The successful organisations awarded funding in the first round are:

  • Crea Norfolk CIC - Kings Lynn Coding and Robotics Club
  • Norwich City Community Sports Foundation - Tackle Maths: Festivals for Children to Inspire Maths Learning
  • Norfolk FWAG - School Conservation Plans
  • Primary Engineer - Hornsea Skills Primary Engineer Construction Programme
  • East Norfolk Multi Academy Trust - Improving Employability Skills with VR Training Programmes
  • Regenda (Positive Footprints) - Inspiring STEM Career Aspirations at Primary Schools in Hornsea-3 Fund Areas

Norwich City Community Sports Foundation will be making mathematics more accessible by running eight Tackle Maths Festivals. These events will engage and inspire children aged 9 to 11 through the practical applications of mathematical concepts in the context of football and Norwich City Football Club.

Jess Moses, Funding Manager at Norwich City Community Sports Foundation, said: “We are delighted to be successful with funding for our Tackle Maths Festivals.  The festivals will inspire young people to enjoy maths in a fun and supportive environment.  Thank you for supporting this fantastic project!”

Norfolk Farming and Wildlife Advisory Group (FWAG) will be using their grant award to inspire and support the next generation of conservationists and environmentalists. Working with schools, their project will raise awareness of biodiversity loss, and the measures that schools can take to support wildlife and habitats.

Jordan Sharman, Commercial Manager at Norfolk FWAG, said: “We're delighted to be working more closely with schools and the next generation of environmentalists and wildlife lovers. Our domestic wildlife really does benefit from a joined-up approach. By working with schools to provide more food and habitats for our wildlife, we will see the increase of biodiversity across the county and inspire the next generation in the process.”

Crea Norfolk CIC will be delivering 65 coding and robotics sessions particularly aimed at young people in North Lynn, young people with SEND, and Home Educated children. They hope by the end of the academic year to have prepared several teams with competition ready robots.

Kirsten Murray, Coding Club Session Provider at Crea Norfolk CIC, said: “Crea Norfolk is delighted to be awarded a grant from the Hornsea 3 Skills Fund. The grant will enable us to expand our Coding and Robotics Club provision in Kings Lynn, welcoming new members and engaging with more advanced digital technology. We are looking forward to designing and building robots with young people in North Lynn.”

Imran Nawaz, Senior Advisor & Community Benefit Fund Manager at Ørsted, said: “Through Hornsea 3 we want to leave a lasting positive legacy in the areas in which we’re working. These fantastic projects will make a real impact in the region, and we look forward to seeing the results. Our skills fund has closed for this year, but our Hornsea 3 Community Fund next round is currently open until 27th November. We’re looking forward to seeing the applications and working with more community groups.”

The Skills Fund forms part of the Hornsea 3 Community Fund which will award a total of £7 million over a targeted ten-year period. The six successful organisations applied through a competitive application process administered by the independent grant-making charity GrantScape.
