Walney Wind Cheetahs
Walney Wind Cheetahs, in partnership with Ørsted, invites runners of all abilities to join the Run Like the Wind 10K and Family Fun Run on Walney Island. This event offers a flat, fast two-loop course along the coast, with a welcoming atmosphere for both seasoned runners and families looking for a morning by the sea.

Ørsted’s Generation UK Hub operates and maintains across four wind farms from Barrow-in-Furness, collectively helping to power UK homes and businesses while supporting local jobs and supply chains. Walney Extension - which can be seen from the course - was inaugurated on 6 September 2018 and, at the time, became the world’s largest offshore wind farm, generating renewable electricity for nearly 600,000 UK homes. From turbine technicians and marine specialists to data analysts and apprentices, over 85% of Ørsted’s west coast team live within an hour of their base, showing just how deeply they're rooted in the local community. Ørsted's team are excited to be running in the race, with colleagues travelling from Hull to join in!

The course begins at the Round House and proceeds along closed roads toward the coast, with runners joining the beach path for stunning coastal views across the Irish Sea along Walney Island’s shoreline. The route continues along the seafront toward Biggar Bank, offering wide-open views, sea air, and the chance to run alongside the island’s wind turbines. After completing the first loop, participants return past the start area to begin the second lap, finishing on the front by the West Shore Club.

“As Walney Wind Cheetahs, we’re excited to bring this coastal event to Walney Island and welcome runners of all levels, from just this morning we only have 30 fun run spaces left,” said Carol Park, Chair of the Walney Wind Cheetahs. “With Ørsted’s generous sponsorship, this is a fantastic opportunity to be part of a supportive community event by the sea. We'd recommend booking before Sunday as we're hoping for a sell out!”

“It’s so great to have been able to work as partners with the Walney Wind Cheetahs to bring forward this exciting 10k running race in the local area. Sponsoring the run reflects our commitment to the local community for which we have been a part of whilst we operate our wind farms off the coast. We believe in bringing people together for a safe, inclusive day of running and fun by the sea, while supporting local businesses and family every step of the way - and could you ask for a better view?” said Emma Toulson, Head of Stakeholder Relations at Ørsted.
