The race day saw a welcoming, coastal atmosphere along a flat, fast two-loop course. Runners began at the Round House, heading along closed roads toward the coast, joining a beach path that delivered stunning views across the Irish Sea along Walney Island’s shoreline. The route continued along the seafront toward Biggar Bank, offering wide-open views, sea air and the chance to run beside Walney’s iconic wind turbines. After completing the first loop, participants returned past the start area to begin the second lap, finishing on the front by the West Shore Club.
A true community day, the event underscored Ørsted’s commitment to local communities, supporting local businesses and families every step of the way. The course presentation and day-long activities provided a safe, inclusive, and enjoyable experience by the sea. Ørsted’s team members, traveling from Barrow, Hull, London and beyond, were among the participants and volunteers.
Ørsted operate four wind farms from Barrow-in-Furness, powering UK homes and businesses while supporting local jobs and supply chains. Some of the wind turbines can be spotted from the course on a clear day.

Without the volunteers, runners, crowd, and sponsors we wouldn’t have had such a successful first race!”
Emma Toulson, Head of Stakeholder Relations at Ørsted, added: “I travelled across from Hull to participate in the event with our team based in Barrow, it was so great to see so many people turn out to put on their running shoes. This event is a great example of us being able to work with local communities to bring events to the people of the area. Thanks so much for having me, I’ll be wearing my finisher’s t-shirt with pride.”
Ørsted and the Walney Wind Cheetahs are proud to have brought the Run Like the Wind races to Walney Island as a grass roots grown local event. The success of the inaugural race begins a strong foundation for future years and continued collaboration with the local community, ensuring more people can experience the unique coastal route with turbine views that Walney Island offers.
