Applications open for Ørsted's biggest intake of wind turbine technician apprentices

Ørsted is now accepting applications for its expanded 2025 Wind Turbine Technician Apprenticeship Programme. The four-year training pathway equips individuals with cutting-edge technical skills, hands-on offshore experience and the chance to play a key role in combatting climate change. The programme provides passionate individuals with practical experience at Ørsted sites across the East and West Coasts, including Barrow-in-Furness, Birkenhead and Grimsby.

As the UK accelerates its transition to cleaner and more secure energy sources, the demand for skilled wind turbine technicians continues to rise. With the government setting an ambitious target of 43–50GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030, the sector is expected to triple its workforce to over 100,000. Ørsted’s apprenticeship provides a foundation for aspiring technicians to gain the skills and experience needed to play a vital role in this transformation, contributing to the UK’s green energy future.

Now in its ninth year, the apprenticeship kicks off with a year of classroom-based learning at North Lindsey College. For the final three years, apprentices gain practical offshore experience at one of Ørsted’s 12 wind farms, working alongside industry experts and on-site projects. Apprentices not only develop technical skills but also actively engage with the community to promote Ørsted’s work.  One apprentice also had the opportunity to be interviewed by Dragon’s Den star Deborah Meaden at the BBC London studios, sharing insights and key learnings from the apprenticeship.

Rob Howes, Ørsted’s Operations Apprentice Manager, said: "This is an incredible opportunity to get firsthand experience with the cutting-edge technology driving the UK’s transition to renewable energy. As demand for skilled wind turbine technicians continues to rise, we are expanding our apprenticeship programme to develop the next generation of renewable energy technicians. If you enjoy problem-solving, working outdoors, and being part of a close-knit team, this apprenticeship will provide the foundation for a rewarding and exciting career.”

Upon completion of the apprenticeship, successful candidates will achieve a Maintenance & Operations Engineering Technician (MOET) qualification, along with a BTEC Level 3 in Engineering.  Ørsted has a strong track record of retaining talent, with over 95% of apprentices transitioning into full-time roles within the company.

Fiona Paterson, a first-year Apprentice Wind Turbine Technician based in Barrow-in-Furness, shared:

“The first year is college based, learning the fundamentals in hands-on classes. Ørsted really harnesses your passion and teamwork skills to make the apprenticeship fun and informative.   I am very excited to get my teeth stuck into my second year and going offshore and using those skills on the turbines.”

Coleen Forde, Head of Competency Management at Ørsted, added: " Whether you’re leaving school or looking for a career change, this apprenticeship offers the chance to develop valuable skills and be part of something bigger. This isn’t just about learning a trade—it’s about building a meaningful career in a fast-growing industry that truly matters. We’ve seen apprentices grow from strength to strength and be promoted to team leads and operations managers.”

Applications are open until Friday 21st March 2025. Candidates aged 16 and above with a minimum of three GCSEs (grade C/4 or above) in Maths, English and Science are encouraged to apply. The process includes submitting an application, completing standard maths and English tests and undertaking project work before receiving an invitation to an onsite assessment day.
